Printing Bar Codes

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

There are two main considerations in bar code printing for small businesses, first the printers the software works with and secondly the print quality. Most software can send print commands to Windows based printers, including ink jet, laser and dot matrix. Of course they are also compatible with popular thermal printers. But what is the difference? And what works the best?

Inkjet
Inkjet printers are cheap and adequate for some uses, but not bar code printing. Scanners require a high level of quality and these types of printers cannot provide consistent quality.

Laser
Laser printers can work for bar code printing, however may not be suitable for mass production. Generally, laser printers print bar codes on common sticker types like Avery, which can be purchased anywhere. So this is a good choice for a small company that only needs a limited number of stickers or it is a good choice to use as a back up, like for printing replacement stickers.

Dot Matrix
Dot matrix printers are impact type printers and are still used for things like forms with multiple copies. But they can also be used for jobs that do not require color and do not require high quality. In some rare cases they are used to print receipts that have bar codes on them, but the quality is not dependable.

Thermal Printers
Thermal transfer or label specific printers, use a thermal printhead that applies to marked heat surfaces and they are fast. Thermal printers are the best choice for high-quality label printing. Thermal printers can produce exact bar widths, which bar code scanners require.

Keep in mind that it is much easier, in most cases, to replace a printer than an enterprise version of bar code and label software. So it is a good idea to choose your printer based on your software preference to ensure compatibility.

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The inkjet printer is looked upon as an essential computer peripheral that every computer user must have, for whatever purpose he or she uses the computer. The inkjet printer is a very versatile printer that can be used to create hard copies of just about any document, and can even produce high resolution color prints. Many home computer users favor the inkjet printer because the inks consumed by the inkjet printer are relatively more affordable than most types of inks.

The popularity and the versatility of the inkjet printer are such that many big name manufacturers of the inkjet printer have combined a multitude of functions for this machine. Many inkjet printers now double as fax machines with automatic voice response features just like in answering machines, or perhaps as scanners or as copiers.

What are the best inkjet printers today? Listed below are the five best inkjet printers that have recently earned reviewers’ praises.

Lexmark P4350 All-in-One

The Lexmark P4350 All-in-One inkjet printer is machine that is liked best for the excellent quality of the photos it produces, its user-friendliness, and its affordability. On the downside, some reviewers who find this inkjet printer a little slow and somewhat inconvenient when it comes to printing black-only documents - it requires cartridge swapping in these cases.

HP PSC 1510 All-in-One

Setting aside the fact that the HP PSC 1510 All-in-One is classified as a multipurpose printer, this inkjet printer is remarkably versatile. It can be very fitting for use regardless of whether it will be used for home computing or in an office setting. The one thing that most reviewers do not like about this all-in-one inkjet printer, however, is the fact that it does not have an independent fax machine.

Canon Pixma iP4000

Computer users who demand quality, high performance and affordability in an inkjet printer can find it all with the Canon Pixma iP4000. It is a great all-around inkjet printer that won the approval of most reviewers because of its versatility, the excellent quality of its prints and its speedy performance, and all for a very reasonable price.

Computer Reseller Business: Effective Recourse Policies

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

As a professional in the computer reseller business, you need to create strong recourse policies to handle any customer complaints. If these policies are clear and in place, you can have satisfied customers and a good reputation even if you run into snags along the way.

Elements of Computer Reseller Business Recourse Policies

The most effective recourse policies give the customer a sense of total control. Listen to concerns, apologize for any inconveniences and quickly fix the problem. Taking action in this way will help build a positive relationship in the computer reseller business and give a customer the opportunity to get his needs best met.

A Good Advisor

Consulting an advisor can help a computer reseller business build its reputation. Choose someone that has a strong presence in the community and put the advisor’s name on all brochures, on the website and on the letterheads. Customers will trust you more as a business connected with a well-respected community leader.

The Better Business Bureau

Joining the Better Business Bureau or another similar community group is also important for a computer reseller business. But do more than just join; attend meetings and activities to gain insight into how to better deal with customers and run your business.

Employee Involvement

Employees handling customers on a daily basis need to be involved in the development and execution of recourse policies. You can get valuable information and feedback from employees. Some team members might be overworked or may be in need of new supplies or critical tools. Open communication will make employees comfortable with the sharing process, and they will work harder to find solutions before they think about complaining.

Customer recourse policies are vital to every computer reseller business. Responding to customer complaints quickly and efficiently and making yourself accountable will help promote customer satisfaction.

Computer Running Slow? It Could Be The Registry

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

This is a common problem, especially among PC users. Microsoft Window is notorious for “slowing down” over time. The fact is, it’s not the age of the computer, but how it is used. Unfortunately, the most common use of Windows - changing programs, hardware, and settings - is the most common cause of having your computer run slow.

Common Causes

1. Low RAM

Increasing the RAM of your system can have incredible results. Computer RAM is not that expensive. RAM stands for “Random Access Memory,” and is the main variable in how “fast” your computer is when you’re using it. It allows you to run multiple programs at the same time, and multi-task much more efficiently.

2. Lots of Icons on your desktop

Another cause of a slow computer is a lot of icons on your desktop. It’s so easy to just save stuff to the desktop and then leave it there. The fact is, all those shortcuts and icons on the desktop eat up RAM, and if you have low RAM to begin with it’s not a pretty sight. Clean up the icons on your desktop and you’ll see a good boost in performance.

3. Fragmented Hard Drive

The way your computer stores data is a little cryptic, but the basic fact is that data can be split up and files stored in pieces all over your hard drive. When you need to retrieve files and run programs the computer has to find all the pieces and put them together. You can defragment your hard drive and put all the pieces together on the hard drive so your computer doesn’t have to go searching around for them. You can defragment your hard drive by going to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter.

4. Cluttered And Corrupted Windows Registry

Perhaps the most common cause of a slow computer, especially one that is older than 6 months, is a cluttered and corrupted Windows registry. Over time as you use your computer and install and uninstall programs, change settings, and introduce new hardware, the Windows registry gets changed. Sometimes old registry entries are not removed, and they get “left over.” Over time these registry entries build up, and since Windows needs the registry to run, problems with the registry can severely hamper your system.

Think of the registry as a large filing cabinet where your programs and hardware store all their vital settings and preference files. This filing cabinet can get cluttered and disorganized with old folders, useless files, and corrupted entries. When Windows tries to read stuff in the cabinet, it gets tripped up on all the invalid entries.

The best way to speed up a slow PC is to use a good registry cleaner. A registry cleaner is a special program that can scan through your Windows registry in seconds and remove the broken entries. This can have a dramatic effect on the speed of your computer, boosting boot times and performance.

Maximize Profits By Handling Slow Computer Performance

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

In order to stay on top, businesses consistently try to find more efficient and practical solutions to create a profitable atmosphere in their workplace. Whether it’s concentrating their efforts in one aspect of the business or implementing new methods of handling financial decisions, every company wants to maximize their profits while maintaining a well organized structure that ensures future success.

Most successful businesses are not willing to repeat actions that have already been proven to fail. It just doesn’t make sense to throw money away when you’re in the business of making money. Yet everyday businesses unknowingly toss aside countless dollars by repeating a mistake that will only compound their problems.

There are few mistakes more damaging to a business than ignoring the health of their computer network system. By turning a blind eye and ignoring how the network operates many businesses will find themselves scratching their heads, wondering why their once efficient office is now home to lengthy delays and wasted hours.

Many people believe that their computer’s performance slows down overnight. It’s as if one day it was operating at peek speed and the next morning the hard drive shifted to neutral. The truth is computers often give several warning signs that something is wrong and that if it’s not fixed it will progressively get worse.

Just like a business wouldn’t ignore an employee’s drop in performance without addressing the issue, the same approach must be made when a computer’s performance begins to lag. The solution to slow computer performance is not in overlooking the problem but in solving the issue the moment it’s noticed.

One of the biggest problems influencing a business’s computer network system today is fragmentation. If we are experiencing lengthy delays in booting up the system, a slowdown in application load time or file retrieval, a sluggish experience browsing the internet or checking and sending emails, chances are the hard drive has too many fragmented files.

Unbeknownst to most, computers will naturally fragment files because that’s the way they’ve been designed. While they’ll keep things in order for a short period of time, there is little flexibility in a computer’s storage ability. Quite simply, if a business hired an employee and they filed things in the manner a computer does it wouldn’t be long before they began looking for a new employee. Computers scatter files throughout the hard drive with little concern for keeping things in order. When we try to pull a file up the hard drive is forced to search for the all the pieces of information that you want, thus the delay.

A computer’s hard drive looks for space when saving a file, there is little regard for whether or not the contents of the file stay together. As an example, when we make additions to an existing file and save that information the computer doesn’t look for enough space to keep that file as one unit of information, it simply fills the original space and then places the additions to the file in another space. This causes fragmentation. For a business, it’s important to remember that their computer network system is handling thousands of files a day and over the course of time this can result in a serious case of fragmentation.

Fortunately, fragmentation doesn’t necessarily signal the end for a computer, but if left untreated it will almost certainly cause the hard drive to crash.

The simple solution, as well as the right solution, to maintaining a computer’s speed and keeping a network system running efficiently is installing defragmentation software. This simple act works to clean the hard drive of fragmented files and pieces together the broken bits of a file and saves it as one piece. Because defrag software continues to work once installed the worries of fragmented files are gone. After installing the defragmentation software a computer’s speed is restored and the wasted hours of waiting for files and emails and applications to load are gone.

RV Loan Tax Deduction

RV Loans as a Tax Deduction?

The vast majority of individuals who finance their recreational vehicle may qualify to deduct the interest on their RV loan as a second home. Not only will you be able to enjoy the benefits of RV travel, you will likely receive a mortgage interest deduction as well.

To qualify, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has ruled that:

The RV Must be used as security for the loan. The RV must have basic sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities.

Nearly all RV types — motor homes, travel trailers, truck campers and many folding camping trailers - are equipped with these facilities.*

*An RV with full facilities can qualify as a “dwelling unit” under the IRS code section 280A(f)(1). The U.S. tax court case of Haberkorn v. Commissioner. 75 T.C. 259 (Nov. 12, 1980 filed) gives further guidance on the tax deductibility of RVs.

The IRS description qualifies virtually every type of recreational vehicle on the market today! Even pop-up campers may qualify under this description. All you would need is a simple stove and porta-potty. So enjoy the benefits of RV travel and get a tax advantage too!

Taxpayers may not claim the interest from more than two qualified homes on their tax returns. Ask your tax adviser for more information. Choosing the Perfect Tennis Bag

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

When choosing a tennis bag you’ll need to consider how much room you will need. Do you need to bring 2 rackets or 6? Size of the bag does matter. Choosing one too small will mean you’ll have to bring 2 bags, but purchasing one that is too large will be cumbersome to take with you. Consider the number of rackets you will need to carry, as well as strings and extra grips. You’ll also want to make sure you have ample room for the extra things you need too like sun screen, tennis balls, change of clothes including an extra pair of shoes. Look for a tennis bag that has comfortable handles and carry straps. Some of the tennis bags are meant to be carried as a backpack so determine ahead of time if that is a feature you desire.

When purchasing one of the popular top brand names like Wilson, Prince Pro, or Head make sure you put your name on the bag or visibly customize it in some way which makes it easily identifiable. This can help to end the confusion at the court when multiple identical bags are present. Also put some type of permanent identification inside the bag so it can be returned to you if it is lost.

So what are the top bags and price ranges? The Wilson tennis bags are definitely at the top of the list. Wilson has the patent-pending Thermoguard technology which keeps the racket cool. Price range is $50 to $60. In addition to the Thermoguard 6 pack, Wilson also has the Wilson Tour Super 6 tennis bag. This tennis bag also has the Thermoguard protection, can be worn as a backpack, and has 3 compartments which can carry 4 rackets each.

No matter your budget, you are sure to find a great tennis bag to suit your needs. Shop around and check out several brands before making your final decision.

What Does Refurbished, Remanufactured, Or Reconditioned Mean?

Monday, May 12th, 2008

When you are shopping for consumer electronics or computer related products, chances are you’ve seen products labeled as refurbished, remanufactured or reconditioned.

All three terms mean the same thing, and they refer to the product being returned in less than 30 days, sent back to the manufacturer to be inspected, tested, repackaged, and then resold. Most refurbished products have been sold, lightly used or not even used at all, and then returned. “Once an item is opened, it can’t legally be sold as a new product. Often returns are sent back to the manufacturer to be refurbished. But sometimes a merchant’s contract with the manufacturer doesn’t allow returns or only allow so many. In that case the merchandise may go to a company known as a refurb house which cleans the items, checks them out and packs them in new boxes with manuals and accessories.

If you’ve ever returned a product at a big box electronics store within the 30 day return policy, the returned product will most likely go through this process and resold as refurbished. Rest assured refurbished products are not defective and are tested to be in perfect working condition. Best yet, refurbished products sell for anywhere between 20% - 60% off the normal retail price of the product.

With the refurbished products a $50-$60 billion dollar industry, refurbished products are a legitimate saving money option that many people consider. Even giving somebody a refurbished product isn’t considered taboo. If you think about it, the receiver is receiving more bang for the buck!

There are countless deals online and many deal sites that help you find them. We were never satisfied with the other deal sites out there and that’s why we created CheaperDeals.net: to find and list the best deals at the cheapest prices.
